The citation generator is designed so that a working reference list can be stored locally in your browser without requiring an account. Source lookups may send the identifier or search information you enter to our WordPress server and to external bibliographic services needed to retrieve metadata.

We encourage you not to enter confidential manuscripts, patient information, passwords or other sensitive personal data into citation-search fields.

Information we may process

Information you submit to the citation generator

Depending on the feature you use, this may include:

  • DOI;
  • PMID;
  • PubMed URL;
  • ISBN;
  • webpage URL;
  • article or book title;
  • manually entered bibliographic fields;
  • BibTeX records; and
  • information extracted locally from a PDF for source identification.

Information sent when you contact us

If you email us, we receive the information you choose to provide, such as your email address, message and any attachments.

Technical information

Like most websites, the hosting server and security infrastructure may process technical information such as IP address, browser/user-agent data, request time, requested URL, HTTP status and security logs. The exact retention period depends on the hosting and security configuration.

Reference-list storage in your browser

The current citation-generator implementation stores the working reference list locally in the browser. This allows references to persist without creating a user account.

Browser-local storage is not permanent cloud storage. Your list can be lost if you clear site data, use private browsing, change browsers or use another device.

We recommend exporting or copying important bibliographies rather than relying on local browser storage as a long-term archive.

External metadata services

To identify sources and retrieve bibliographic data, the Site may send the identifier, title or other search information you provide to external services.

Crossref

Used for DOI and scholarly metadata retrieval. A request may include the DOI or scholarly search terms needed to find the record.

NCBI / PubMed

Used for PMID and PubMed-related metadata retrieval. A request may include the PMID or search terms needed to identify the article.

Google Books

Used for book/ISBN search. A request may include the ISBN, title or related book-search terms.

These services operate under their own terms and privacy practices. We use them to retrieve public bibliographic information; we do not control their independent logging or processing practices.

PDF import

The current PDF-import workflow is intended to inspect the file in the browser for identifiers or title information that can be used for metadata lookup. It is not intended as a confidential-document storage service.

Because technical implementations can change, do not upload or process a PDF containing patient data, confidential unpublished research, passwords, personal identifiers or other sensitive information unless you have independently verified that the workflow is appropriate for that material.

Metadata caching

The Site may temporarily cache bibliographic API responses on the WordPress server to improve performance and reduce repeated requests to external metadata providers. The cached material is bibliographic/source metadata rather than a user profile.

Cookies and similar technologies

WordPress and installed plugins may use cookies or similar storage for essential site functionality, security, administrator sessions, preferences or other enabled features.

If non-essential analytics, advertising or marketing technologies are enabled, this policy and the Site’s consent mechanism should be updated to describe them before they are used where consent or notice is required.

Analytics and advertising

This policy does not assume that a specific analytics or advertising platform is active unless it is actually configured on the live Site.

How long information is kept

Retention depends on the type of information and why it is needed. Browser-local reference data remains under your browser’s control. Server logs may be retained by the hosting or security infrastructure for operational and security purposes. Contact emails may be retained as reasonably necessary to respond, maintain support history or meet legal obligations.

Temporary bibliographic cache entries may expire automatically according to the Site’s technical configuration.

When information may be shared

Information may be processed by service providers necessary to operate the Site, such as hosting, email, security or technical infrastructure providers. Source-lookup information is transmitted to the bibliographic services described above when needed to perform a search.

We may also disclose information when required by law or when reasonably necessary to protect the security and legal rights of the Site or others.
